SHREVEPORT, LA - Edith Gerson died on Thursday, December 28 at her home in Birmingham, Alabama.

Edith was born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1913. Her husband Walter L. Gerson pre-deceased her. After graduating from Byrd High School, Edith attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She was in the first graduating class of the School of Home Economics earning a degree in Dietetics. After completing her internship in Rochester, New York, Edith returned to Shreveport to work as a registered dietitian at a local hospital. Following her husband's return after World War II, she worked in the building supply business they owned in Shreveport. She enjoyed fishing with Walter, traveling to Elder Hostels, sewing, knitting and playing mah jongg. After Walter's death in 1979, Edith moved to Mobile where she continued pursuing her many interests. In 1987 she moved to Birmingham.

Edith was a member of Temple EmanuEl in Birmingham and B'nai Zion Temple in Shreveport. She was a Life member of Hadassah and was active in the B'nai Zion Temple sisterhood, including a tenure as president. She was also a long-time participant in the sewing program sponsored by National Council of Jewish Women in Mobile and Birmingham, the Joy Club in Birmingham, and the New Horizons program at UAB.

Survivors include daughters, Isabel (Alan) Siegal of Birmingham, Cyrelle Gerson (Craig Osteen) of Arlington, Virginia, and grandchildren Brad and Stuart Siegal and their families of Birmingham, and Walter Osteen of Arlington.

The family wants to thank all of her wonderful caregivers, including her physicians and the caring people from New Beacon Hospice.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hess Chapel at Temple EmanuEl.
