Statesman, Prime Minister of Indonesia. A member of the Socialist Party of Indonesia, he served as prime minister of Indonesia from 14 November 1945 to 3 July 1947. Prior to becoming prime minister he was a student activist in the Netherlands and participated in the Indonesian revolution and was a leader of the Indonesian underground resistance during the Japanese occupation. He was also 2nd Interior Minister of Indonesia and 2nd Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. He is best remembered as the first prime minister and for not supporting the Japanese and worked to gain independence for Indonesia. After leaving the post he was arrested for alleged conspiracy charges for which he was never put on trial. During his imprisonment he suffered from high blood pressure and in 1965 had a stroke, losing his speech. He was sent to Zürich, Switzerland for treatment and died there in exile.
