Her working career was as varied as were her interests. She had been a farm worker, a dry cleaners employee, had managed an Eckerd Drug Store and also a restaurant, and had been a grocery store clerk. Regarded as being a "tough as nails" kind of gal, she had a special love and attraction to babies, enjoyed fishing and flea markets. She also enjoyed traveling, working in her yard, and sharing the bounty from her wide assortment of fruit trees.
Mrs. Vargas whose first husband was Douglas Padgett, a Faison native son whom she met while he was in the military stationed in Texas, is survived by her husband, Juan Vargas Avila, of the home; five children and their spouses, Dianne and Gerald McCranie of Alabama, Patricia and Danny Best of Faison, Glenda Melton and Shannon Taylor of Beautancus community, Mount Olive, Douglas Padgett Jr. and Dawn Padgett of Pikeville, and Brenda P. Heller of Faison; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Cheva Riso of Bakersfield, Calif., and Mini Miller of Lubbock, Texas.
Along with her first husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Larry Padgett; her parents, Hilario Nunez and Ignacia Guerra Nunez; two great-grandsons; a sister; and a brother.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive. Officiating will be the Rev. Paul Rose. Burial will follow the service in the Faison Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home will be Wednesday, November 30, from 7 until 9 p.m. At other times, the family's home is open to friends and family.
