Mr. Pitcairn founded the dealership, which at one time operated 17 new car franchises, in 1958 and continued as president until he retired in 1973. It now operates two: Volvo and Volkswagen dealerships.
The grandson of John Pitcairn, co-founder of Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. (now PPG Industries Inc.), Mr. Pitcairn was born and raised in Bryn Athyn, and attended the Academy of the New Church and the College of the Academy of the New Church. He also attended the University of Pennsylvania.
He was a bombardier with the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Mr. Pitcairn was a member of the Bucks County Chamber of Commerce and the Church of the New Jerusalem in Bryn Athyn, and its school, the Academy of the New Church. There, he tutored students with learning difficulties.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Burnham Pitcairn; sons, Wayde, Clark, Kean, Brant and Torrance; daughters, Jenny Maddock and Shirley; 14 grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters.
