Florence Schmitz
July 26, 1923 - December 23, 2016

Florence Schmitz passed into the arms of her Heavenly Father on December 23, 2016 in Austin, Texas. Florence was born in Austin on July 26, 1923 to Frank James Holmes and Laura Duesterhoeft Holmes.

Florence graduated from Austin High School in 1940. Several years later she met Julius Schmitz when he returned to Austin after serving in the U. S. Army in WWI, and they were married in April, 1947. Having lived her entire life in Austin, Florence possessed many fond memories and stories of Austin’s glorious past, and delighted in sharing them with her family and friends.

Florence was an animal lover, and as far back as family members can remember there was at least one cat--usually more--about the house, and sometimes a dog or two. She was an avid reader and worker of crossword puzzles, and kept at it until she could hardly see. Then we or her caregivers read to her and helped her complete crossword puzzles.

Florence was extremely proud of and devoted to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a kind and loving mother and grandmother and will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

Florence lived for almost 60 years in the home her mother had purchased. Due to her failing health, she moved to an assisted living facility four months ago. Leaving the home so dear to her heart was a great sorrow to her, but she accepted it with dignity and grace.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Julius, son Michael Thomas Schmitz, brothers Clifford Holmes and Albert Holmes.

She is survived by her son Louis Schmitz and wife Patricia of Austin, grandson Jefre Schmitz and wife Elizabeth of Salem, Oregon, grandson Kevin Schmitz and wife Jeanette of Austin, great grandsons Weslee Schmitz of College Station, and Clayton Schmitz of Austin.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the exceptional kindness and loving care provided to her by the caregivers of Cella Bella Senior Services, Cella Bella Hospice Care, and all the staff at Englewood Estates.

At Florence’s request, there will be no services.
