~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He is listed in the 1920 census as head of the house, married, 31 years old and living in Catawba Co. He is not found in the 1930 or the 1940 census. Ila is listed as widowed and head of the house in 1930. In 1940, she is listed as married, but I believe that is an error.
I am unable to locate a death date for him. If anyone reading this has that information please contact me and I will add it.
DESERTS HIS WIFE AND SIX CHILDREN
Mrs. Julius Abernethy today swore out a warrant against her husband charging abandonment. Mr Isenhower, manager of the Standard Garage sent out a number of telegrams to points from Canada to Mexico asking for the detention of Abernethy who left here Thursday afternoon with a Chevrolet towing car which he is alleged to have stolen from the garage. Carrie Conley a Brookford woman is supposed to have joined him at Asheville about a month ago. Abernethy who came here from Hilderbran in Burke county two years ago was discharged by the Standard and since that time had been hanging around the garage. Mr Isenhower said he had been warned about his conduct several times before. The man left his wife and six children youngest just seven weeks old. Abernethy hurried off with another woman on last Thursday he called up the Conley woman at Brookford urged her to where she bought a ticket for Asheville.
Abernethy went to the Standard Garage at the noon hour, it is said and carried off a new Chevrolet believing that it would not missed for several days. He left here that afternoon stopping a few minutes at Hilderbran with relatives and it is presumed joined Carrie Conley at Asheville. Before leaving Abernethy destroyed all of his photographs but a picture at the home of a relative near Hickory was brought in. The man will be well advertised. Mr. Isenhower and Chief Lentz believe he has headed for Mexico to join another runaway couple from Hickory. It was said today that he assisted Van Tassel in getting away. Van Tassell is in Mexico. The automobile was missed Thursday afternoon but it was believed that Abernethy had borrowed it to short time Yesterday however it was learned that the Brookford two had disappeared and they were together. Every effort will be made to locate the couple. Abernethy besides facing a charge of desertion if caught will have to explain his conduct in federal court.
