The following is an exerpt from her death notice, which appeared in the Morganton News Herald:
"Mrs. Sarah Emma Abernathy (sic), widow of J. J. Abernathy and well known eastern Burke resident, died at her home near Hildebran Friday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock, the day after she celebrated her eightieth birthday anniversary. Death followed a brief illness."
She was survived by five sons, three daughters; forty-eight grandchildren; and thirty eight great grandchildren.
