NEWPORT NEWS - Manfred "Freddie" Roehr, CEC. AAC, 76, died Saturday, January 7, 2017 at St. Francis Nursing Home. Born in Neukirich, Prussia, later Germany, on March 16, 1940, he had made his home in Newport News for the past 49 years. Early in life, Manfred joined the Merchant Marines, and came to America, where he was first drafted and reenlisted in the United States Army achieving the rank of SSG. The Army taught him the discipline and trade that would carry him through life. Service and guiding others was the touchstone that became the rule of Manfred's life. He retired from Colonial Williamsburg, working his way from cook to chef, to manager of The Williamsburg Lodge, Chowning's Tavern, Campbell's Tavern and opening Shield's Tavern. Manfred later went on to manage food services at the Richmond Airport. Manfred was especially proud of his accomplishments as a member of the Virginia Chef's Association and the Virginia Culinary Association. He earned the title of Certified Executive Chef, American Academy of Chefs, and was known as trainer, mentor, and teacher to many of the current Apprentices in the culinary field. He was active in the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge #315, becoming Elk of the Year, and serving in many capacities. Manfred participated in support activities at Temple Sinai with his wife, Rhonda Roehr. He was a staple at the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter #2.

Through the years, Manfred was involved with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, Moose Lodge, many walk-a-thons for the American Cancer Society , Multiple Sclerosis Society, and many more. Manfred was accomplished in holding offices in many of the organizations he served, including: secretary, president, and treasurer. He liked to organize events, and most of all, cooking for others. He also enjoyed playing and coaching soccer with Williamsburg Parks & Recreation. His greatest devotion was to his wife of 42 years, Rhonda T. Roehr and family. He took great care of his Mother-in-law, taking her into his home for the last part of her life.

Mr. Roehr is survived by his son, Richard Sarner and his wife, Faye, of Greensboro, NC; his daughter, Lori Sarner Smith and her husband, Michael, of Laguna Hills, Calif.; grandchildren, Kimberly and Alison Smith, Casey Micheil and her husband, Shane, his granddaughter Emma all of California; his sister, Regina Muller, and sister-in-law, Edith Roehr of Hamburg, Germany; and his nieces and nephews, Thorsten and Olaf Muller, Veronika Buschka, Christine, Gabi and Simon Rumohr, and Karin Welzel, all of Germany.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:30 pm Monday, January 16, 2017 at Weymouth Funeral Home in Newport News, VA. Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at Weymouth Funeral Home. Interment will follow at 3:00 pm in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA.
