He was a highly decorated Generalleutnant of the Flyers in the Luftwaffe and Commander of Air Region V in Stuttgart during World War II. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognize extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. He was captured by Allied troops in May 1945 and was released in 1948.
