Marilyn Kelm Mickan, 80 years old of Walburg, Texas, was promoted to her Heavenly home on January 19, 2017 in Georgetown, Texas after a long battle with Dementia.

Marilyn Esther Kelm was born in Walburg, Texas to her loving parents Berthold and Mary (Herzog) Kelm on April 20, 1936. She grew up in Walburg and attended Zion Lutheran School. She and Curtis were classmates at Zion Lutheran Church and School in Walburg where she was baptized and later confirmed. Marilyn decided at the early age of six that she would one day marry Curtis W. Mickan by giving him a simple pin!

Marilyn developed her love for music from her Uncle Wilfred G. Bleeke, principal of Zion school at that time. She had a love for education at a young age, graduating Salutatorian from Zion School. She continued piano and organ lessons from Mr. Bleeke through early high school, solidifying her passion for music. She continued her musical education throughout high school and graduated third in her class.

Marilyn became very active in Zion Lutheran Church’s Walther League which played a key role in her spiritual growth. She served as secretary for the Capital Zone Walther League which had a membership in excess of 3,500 people. Her devoted love and respect for perspective husband Curtis Mickan grew during their high school years. After graduation, she enrolled in a professional business college for two years and became one of the most sought after young professionals in her field. Marilyn was offered a position as executive secretary to the chairman of the Texas Oil and Gas Commission.

Curtis and Marilyn were married November 6, 1955 at Zion Lutheran Church in Walburg by Pastor Walter Beilefelt and resided in Dallas. Shortly after they were married, Curtis and Marilyn had their first daughter Deborah Rene, born on December 10, 1956 and welcomed their second daughter, Melinda Kay, on May 2, 1961.

As a supportive spouse, Marilyn helped see Curtis through his higher education, many expansions of Lutheran Social Services, Concordia University endeavors, and establishing North Dallas Lutheran High School. After seven years in the professional world, Marilyn decided to work from home teaching private piano lessons so she could fulfill her calling to take care of her two young daughters. While caring for her family and devoting her time to her daughters’ many activities, Marilyn became avidly involved in her local church where she and Curtis were active members for 39 years. She was involved with the Lutheran Women’s Ministry League (LWML), Church Choir, Braille Committee, Stephen Ministry and served as a leader for Zion’s Campfire Girls of America. She also served the senior members of Zion Dallas by organizing many social activities for special occasions. In addition to her many church organizations, she was a devoted member of the North Dallas Hospitality Group and the local Meals on Wheels organization.

Marilyn was a talented ceramic artist, specializing in Nativity Scenes and angels, which later led to her interest in painting. She was an accomplished pianist, an award winning tennis player, and enjoyed playing in the neighborhood ladies bridge group. One of her most cherished pastimes was to accompany the family on vacations to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado during the summer and winter.

Curtis and Marilyn decided to move their life from Dallas to Georgetown in 1994 to take care of their aging parents. During their time in Georgetown, Marilyn was an extraordinary grandmother to her six grandchildren whom she adored. She and Curtis joined Faith Lutheran Church of Georgetown where she immediately began serving on various boards and organizations. She was most known for her contagious smile, servant heart, and selfless passion to give to others.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents, Berthold and Mary Kelm, and daughter Deborah Rene Mickan Burgess.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Curtis Walter Mickan; daughter, Melinda Kay Swafford and son in-law Danny Swafford; grandchildren Drew Burgess (wife Nadia), Joshua Swafford (wife Laura), Tiffany Burgess Bogle (husband Samuel), Casey Swafford Rainey (husband Lance), Shaun Burgess and Benjamin Swafford; great-Grandchildren Eoin Burgess, Kennedy and Hadley Swafford, Landri and Quinley Rainey, and Isabella Bogle, along with numerous other relatives and friends.
