Colonel Matthews enlisted in the Regular Army on April 10, 1958 and received a direct commission in March 1965 as Second Lieutenant in the Adjutant General Corps. He retired from the US Army on November 1, 1983. He served two tours in Vietnam where he participated in five campaigns with the First Infantry Division. He has many awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, two awards of the Bronze Start Medal, three awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Medal and three awards of the Army Commendation Medal.
Earned a bachelors degree at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a masters degree at Boston University. Following his retirement from the Army, he worked in Real Estate Development until July 2000 when he retired as Vice President of Sandia Properties, Ltd. Co. He was active in the New Mexico Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties. He served as the Chapter's President in 1994. He was an adjunct instructor at the University of Maryland, Columbia College, Chapman College and National College.
