Lester Krein, who grew up in Trail City, went on to have a career with the Corps of Engineers, working for them for 37 years before retiring. He also had a love and talent for music, and had a barn dance band with his brothers. To his joy, his son and daughter inherited his musical talent. Les was mechanically inclined and enjoyed working on cars in his spare time.

In failing health, Les became a resident of the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck in June 2004. He died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, at the Bismarck care center at the age of 87.

He was born Dec. 8, 1919, in Wishek, N.D., and moved to a farm near Trail City with his parents when he was a small boy. On March 17, 1946, he married Tillie Mehlhaff in Mobridge. They lived in Garrison for a short period of time before moving to Riverdale where he worked for the Corps of Engineers. They moved to Bismarck in 1984. Tillie died December 2002.

Survivors are his son and daughter-in-law, Eldon and Peggy Krein of Bismarck; his daughter and son-in-law, Twila and Leon Henke of Bismarck; his granddaughter Shara Diers of Fargo, N.D.; grandsons Jason and Justin Genter, both of Bismarck; and his two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Lauren Diers of Fargo,

Les is also survived by two sisters, Nettie Overseth of Mobridge and Marge Lemburg of Selby; and three brothers, Oliver Krein of Alaska, Ben Krein of Washington and Edgar Krein of South Dakota.

His parents, four brothers, Eugene, Ted, Nevin and Roland, and his sister, Antalina, preceded him in death.

The funeral for Lester was Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Bismarck Community Church.

Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Bismarck with Eastgate Funeral Service of Bismarck in charge of arrangements.
