After serving in the Swedish military as a teen, Martin emigrated from Stockholm to the US, through Boston, in April 1901 and settled in Concord, NH. His father had emigrated in 1888 and become a US citizen in 1897. His mother followed with two of his eight siblings and his fiance, Susanna Charlotta Linnarsson, the September 1901. Other siblings emigrated in 1902, 1903, and 1904. Martin and Sanna married in 1902 and had 14 children. Martin wrote for a Swedish language newspaper, preached in his church, studied law and German, and always, always voted.
