Martina Treichel, 101, formerly of Missoula, passed away Feb. 5, 2007, in Bozeman. She was born Sept. 15, 1905, in Rugby, N.D., to Joseph and Paulina (Thomas) Keller.

Martina married Rudolph Treichel on Nov. 11, 1924, in Hebron, N.D. In 1928 they moved to Missoula where they had seven children, two of whom died in infancy.

Martina worked as a homemaker while her husband worked at a local lumber mill for 40 years. Once her children were grown she worked at Florence Laundry and as a custodian at her church, Grace United Methodist Church, where she was its oldest member. She survived the hard times by keeping busy with church and quilting. She served 20 years as chairwoman of the Senior Center Quilt Committee. She made sure that all of her family members had their own handmade quilt. One of her quilts appeared in House Beautiful magazine.

Besides quilting, she found time to help neighbors, travel, and take care of her home and her grandchildren. Martina also loved fishing at Georgetown Lake and in Alaska.

Martina is survived by her children, Esther Nelson of Bozeman, Rubin (Faun) Treichel of Missoula, Donald (Violet) Treichel of Turney, Mo.; and daughter-in-law, Carolyn (Fred) Treichel of Missoula; grandchildren: Dan (Deborah) Nelson of Bozeman, Lori (Steve) Golden of Belgrade, Loni (Scott) Restvedt of Belgrade, Julie (Russell) Weider of Arlee, Beth Treichel of Missoula, Don (Becky) Treichel of Turney, Mo., Jim (Helen) Treichel of Kansas City, Kan., Lisa (Dolph) Gower of Reno, Nev., and Mary Treichel of Missoula; nine great-grandchildren; sisters-in-laws, Hilda Ochsner, and Annie Manning; numerous Treichel family members in Missoula; and nieces and nephews in Yakima, Wash.; Seattle, Wash.; and Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph; infant children, Lillian and Edwin; sons, Theodore Treichel (Air Force) and Fred Treichel of Bonner; daughter-in-law, Virginia Treichel; son-in-law, Dan Nelson; and grandchildren, Jim Treichel and Susan Treichel.

She was the longest living and the last survivor of her siblings: Mary Gregory, Katy Holder, Ann Miller, Adam Keller, Vince Keller, and Balzer Keller.

A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Sunset Memorial Garden in Missoula, with visitation from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home in Missoula.

Memorials in her name may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 1753 S. 10th, Missoula, MT 59801.
