Charles Scharfe was born April 2, 1885, in Lucan, MN, son of Franz and Amelia (Volreth) Scharfe, He remained on the farm until he was 21 years old, having been motherless since the age of 14. He then worked in a hardware store with a brother, and later in a grain elevator. He was married in 1910 to Miss Susanne F E Quast. In 1915 he and his wife came to Hill county, homesteading in the Cottonwood community north of Havre, where they had a general merchandise store, and Mrs Scharfe was assistant postmistress. In 1918, Mr and Mrs Scharfe came to Havre, where he was employed in the Havre Commercial company until it closed. He then was employed for several years in the FA Buttrey company grocery department; was connected with the Imperial elevator for a year, and then returned to manage the Buttrey company hardware department for eight years. At the end of that time he bought out the Havre Trading company grocery and hardware department located in the Masonic Temple, closing out the hardware and adding to the grocery stock. Later the firm added the Atwater-Kent radio line and a line of washing machines. About 1928 the grocery line was sold to JB Herndon, the Scharfe's the moving to their present location at 234 Third avenue with their manufacturer's lines and added the Norge refrigerator. Three years later, in 1931, the Lobdell Land company was purchased, the merchandise closed out, the real estate business being continued until the present time. In all business concerns, Mrs Scharfe was an active partner of her husband.

During his years in Havre, Mr Scharfe had been an active member of the Van Orsdel Methodist church, a member of the board of trustees, and of the choir; and for many years was assistant superintendent of the Sunday school. He was also a member of the Rotary club and of the Havre Chamber of Commerce, in both of these taking an active part, being deemed by his associates an upright and conscientious citizen, and a good friend.

Mr Scharfe passed away June 25, after an illness of only a few hours. He had been at work in the morning and mentioned a slight constriction in the chest. After lunch he returned to the office as usual but still feeling ill, he went without a word to a physician's office, where he became violently ill from a heart attack. Taken to a local hospital about 3 o'clock, he passed away at 6:45pm.

Mr Scharfe is survived by his wife, Susanne Scharfe, and five sisters and nine brothers. One brother preceded him in death.
