Nelvera Schiebout, 92, of Orange City passed away Monday, April 21, 2014, at Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. John Klompien and Rev. Arlyce Schiebout will officiate. Interment will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 4 to 7 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation will resume 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Nelvera Hendrine was born on Dec. 2, 1921, in rural Alton, Iowa, the oldest child of Peter and Gertrude (Van Roekel) Roos. She was raised on her parents' farm between Alton and Newkirk, Iowa. She attended the Newkirk Reformed Church and graduated from the country school near her parents' home.

She married Abe Schiebout on Nov. 27, 1942, at her parents' farm, when he was in the U.S. Army. After the conclusion of World War II and Abe’s return from the Pacific in late 1945, they made their home in Orange City, where she was a homemaker. He passed away on Feb. 14, 2002, in Orange City.

In 2006, Mrs. Schiebout became a resident of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community. In 2008, she moved to the Heritage House Nursing Home, both in Orange City. She transferred to Prairie Ridge in October 2013.

She was a member of Calvary Christian Reformed Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, organist, and choir member, and participated in Bible study groups and the women’s organizations.

She was also active in the community with the American Legion Auxiliary (life member), in Cub Scouts serving as a den mother, in 4-H serving as a club leader, and in Y-Teens as a sponsor. She enjoyed traveling, visiting children and grandchildren, gardening, quilting, knitting, and the annual family fishing trip.

Survivors include a son, Firman (Cheryl) Schiebout of Holmen, Wis.; two daughters, the Rev. Arlyce Schiebout of Perth, Ontario, Canada, and Dr. Denise Schiebout of Alpena, Mich.; daughter-in-law, Annette Schiebout of Algonquin, Ill.; nine grandchildren, Matthew Schiebout, Sara Schiebout, Janson LaBond (Rhonda Bulloch), Christine Heyes LaBond (Scott Heyes), Dr. Jessen Schiebout, Kyle Schiebout, Ben Dixon, Thomas Dixon, and Andrew Dixon; one great-grandson, Jacob Alexander Heyes; three sisters, Maxine (Ray) Heemstra of Bartlesville, Okla., Gladys Kessel of Byron Center, Mich., and Arlene (Chuck) Lubbers of Orange City; one brother, Edwin (Bev) Roos of Sheldon, Iowa; two brothers-in-law, Harry Ostendorf of Oshkosh, Wis., and Chris Schiebout of Holland, Mich.; and a sister-in-law, Dinah Ter Horst of Sioux Center, Iowa.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Nolan Schiebout (2001); two sisters, Bernice Baker and Muriel Oostendorf; a brother, Kenneth Roos; a brother in infancy; three brothers-in-law, Al Kessel, Lawrence Ter Horst, and Fred Baker; and a sister-in-law, Berdena Roos.
