Haverstraw, N.Y. (AP) -- Eight of 11 persons riding in one automobile were killed Christmas Day when the car spun out of control on a wet highway and rammed into a building. Five adults and three children lost their lives. Three children survived. They were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern in critical condition.
The accident came after a family's Christmas visit to PEDRO CRUZ, 35, a prisoner in Wallkill State Prison north of here. Included were the prisoner's six children his mother, sister and brother-in-law.
Listed dead were the car's driver, EUGENIO COLON, 51, and his wife, AIDA, 40, of The Bronx.
CRUZ' sister, AIDA PAGAN, 20, and her husband, SEGISMUNDO PAGAN, 38, of Manhattan.
CRUZ' mother, LEOPOLDA CRUZ, 60, of Manhattan.
CRUZ' children, JOSE, 5, VIOLETTA, 3, and PETER, 8.
The hospitalized children are MARIA, 9, LUIS, 7, and EUGENIO, 4.
Police said the car was going south on route 9W when it skidded and struck the steel and concrete building used by a rock quarry.
The children were being returned to St. Dominics home for children at Blauvelt, NY.
PEDRO CRUZ is serving a sentence for the fatal stabbing of his wife in 1958. He had asked the home to let the children visit him.
