"Cavaliere Sorgini
Cavaliere Nicola Sorgini, 88, Conductor Emeritus of the Verdi Band of Norristown and retired proprietor of Sorgini Painting & Paperhanger, passed away Feb. 21, 2007 surrounded by his loving family.

Cavaliere Sorgini a native of Fossacesia, (Cheiti), Abruzzi, Italy was born on Feb. 22, 1919. The son of the late Fillippo and Concetta (Sisti) Sorgini. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Margaret (Carnevale) Sorgini.

He is survived by his five sons, Philip of Phoenixville, John of Trooper, Joseph (Regina) of Lansdale, Mario and Leonard of Norristown; two daughters, Concetta Berardelli (James) of East Norriton, and Theresa Taphorn of Norristown. He is additionally survived by 21 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and three nephews Donato, Fillippo and Francesco DeSimone.

A musician since the age of 7, Cavaliere Sorgini brought his passion for music to the United States when he arrived on July 16, 1936, at the age of 17. Within four hours of his arrival Cavaliere Sorgini landed his first music job with the Verdi Band performing at the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Blackhorse. He continued to play the clarinet, saxophone, and percussion for the Verdi Band until 1964, when he was offered the assistant conductorship, a position he held until 1975.

From 1975 until retirement in 2001, he held the position of Conductor. In 2001, he assumed the position of Conductor Emeritus, a post he held until his death.
In recognition for his efforts to bring the Italian symphonic music culture to America, Sorgini was bestowed the title of Cavaliere al Merito, the highest honor that Italy presents to a native son outside of the country. Cavaliere Sorgini founded the Melody Kings Dance band in the 1940's and the Holy Saviour Mens' Choir in 1941.
Additionally, he was a member of the Holy Saviour Parish choir, Local 341 American Federation of Musicians, Men of Malvern, Holy Name Society, Sons of Italy Lodge 1776, Benevenuto Lodge 2572, and Societa Cavaliere D'Itala. While he was noted for his many accomplishments, Cavaliere
Sorgini will be most remembered for his love of God and his family. The legacy he leaves his family is an appreciation for music, the traditions of the Italian culture, and the knowledge that honor of family surpasses all things.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday, February 26 at 10 am in Holy Saviour Church, 407 East Main St., Norristown, PA 19401. Entombment will be in St. Patrick's Mausoleum. Calling hours will be Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and 9 to 9:45 a.m., Monday at the church.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Holy Saviour Church or in the form of mass cards. Funeral arrangements are by the Volpe Funeral Homes inc. 610-275-2583."
