Roberta Bennett Haynes, 85, of Beckley, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.
Born at Sandy Level, Va., she was the daughter of the late Rev. George L. Bennett and Fannie Lynthecum Bennett.
Mrs. Haynes was a homemaker and a seamstress. She was a former member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Beckley, and was a graduate of Stratton High School, and also attended West Virginia State College.
Roberta married James Watkins Haynes in Glen White on December 23, 1933. She was preceded in death by her husband, in December of 1984; three sisters, Lillie Clements, Nettie McKinney and Virginia McDonald; and two brothers, Clarence George Bennett and Lester Bennett.
Survivors include a daughter, Dianne Haynes Smith of Hillard, Ohio; a son-in-law, the Rev. Ronald C. Smith of Beckley; grandchildren, Yvonne Smith Mitchell and her husband, William, of New Carrollton, Md., Rhonda Smith Henderson and her husband, Jeffrey L., of Lancaster, Ohio, Teresa Smith of Hillard, Ohio, and Ronald A. Smith and his wife, Cathy Flores, of San Leandro, Calif.; six great-grandchildren; six sisters, Edmonia Hoover of Beckley, Lorine Cooper of Lester, Naomi Turner of Beckley, Eleanor Mitchell and her husband, Clarence, of Bluefield, W.Va., Willie Durham of Anaheim, Calif., and Lucy Smoot and her husband, Boyd, of Madison; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley, with the Rev. Robert Morton officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour before the service at the funeral home.
