Ursula Stein Hobson-beloved wife of over 66 years of Walter Edmund Hobson III- passed away from an extended illness on January 8, 2014, at the age of 85. A native of New Orleans, Ursula also spent many years living in Annapolis, MD, and Urbanna, VA, before returning to the city of her birth in 1997. She most recently resided at Chateau de Notre Dame with her husband.

She is survived by her children Nancy Getten (Thomas) of Houston, TX; W. Edmund, IV (Shelley) of Wilmington, NC; Patricia Hobson Pottle (Russ) of Dallas, PA; Holly Hobson of Charlotte, NC; and Constance Hobson (Dennis Phayer) of Mandeville, LA.

She was predeceased by her son James Hastings (Roberta) of Annapolis, MD.

She was the grandmother of Elisabeth Getten Atwood (Chad), Douglas Vandever Getten (Jennie), Thomas Edmund Getten (Megan), Timothy Jordan Navarro (Becky), Charles Edmund Hobson, John Shelton Hobson, and Hillary Alston Phayer. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren.

Ursula was the daughter of the late Oscar Charles and Annie Emmett Stein and was the youngest of six children.

.Ursula adored sailing, sewing (particularly party dresses for her daughters when they were young), and cooking; she was also a fierce bridge competitor. She especially took joy in being out on the water with her husband on Lake Pontchartrain, the Chesapeake Bay, the Rappahannock River, the New England coast, and the Caribbean Sea on a variety of classic sailboats that she and her husband owned. Ursula passed down her passion for cooking traditional New Orleans cuisine to all of her children, who continue to share her famous culinary heritage with others. Ursula graduated from Holy Name of Jesus High School in uptown New Orleans and attended H. Sophie Newcomb College. She and Ed married on February 15, 1947.

Her children especially wish to thank Donna Milne, Ursula's trusted friend and helper. They also wish to thank Dr. Leandro Area, her caregivers at Chateau de Notre Dame, particularly Geneva Rogers, Cassandra Cousin, Elaina Lewis, Stacy Fontenot, Phoebe Talley, and Sherry Guidry, as well as the caring staff at Canon Hospice.

Visitation will be on Saturday, January 18, 2014 between 10:30 A.M. and 12:30 P.M. at Lake Lawn Funeral Home, in Metairie. Interment will be private in Metairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Name of Jesus School or a charity of your choice.
