Christened with his twin brother Nicolaus at the Evangelical Church ln nearby Kirchbrombach, he immigrated to St. Louis with his parents and siblings in 1856.

William served along side his older brother Louis as a private in the Union Army during the Civil War. He married Wilhelmina Karnatz in St. Louis on April 5, 1865, and the couple had 8 children, 7 of whom lived to adulthood.

William became a naturalized American citizen on October 15, 1872. He worked with his brothers as a cigar maker and died in St. Louis on April 29, 1891 of infirmities, partially related to his military service.
