Nicholas and his twin brother Wilhelm were christened in 1843 at the Evangelical Church of Kirchbrombach, Hessen-Odenwaldkreis, Germany. He immigrated the the US with his parents and siblings in 1856, settling in St. Louis, Missouri.

Nicholas married Anna Margaret Kautz in St. Louis on July 3, 1866. They had 4 children, 2 of whom lived to adulthood. Anna died in 1872, and on October 15 of that year, Nicholas became a naturalized American citizen.

Nicholas married Minnie Mueller on May 10, 1873. They had 5 children, 3 of whom lived to adulthood. Nicholas worked with his brothers as a cigar maker.
