Karin A. Layo, age 59, passed away unexpectedly Canton-Potsdam Hospital on July 4, 2017. Family and friends are welcome to call the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena on Sunday (July 9, 2017) from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. A funeral service for Karin will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday (July 10, 2017) at St. John’s Episcopal Church with Mother Kathryn Boswell officiating. Burial will take place at Bixby Cemetery in Norfolk, NY.

Karin was born on April 5, 1958 in Parma, OH to Richard and Mary (Kennedy) Arnold. She attended Clawson High School class of ‘76 and later graduated from Michigan State University, obtaining a Bachelor's Degree and belonged to the Chi Omega National Sorority. Upon graduation Karin married Philip Belair and moved to Massena, NY. Karin was employed with Massena Central School District working for nearly 10 years, providing special education to students in need. She was married to Kevin Layo on August 15, 1995 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Massena.

Karin is survived by her loving husband Kevin Layo of Norfolk, and her three sons Andrew L. of Syracuse, Aaron J. of San Francisco, CA and Even P. Belair of Syracuse, and her two step-daughters Amanda Lapage of Massena and Mallory and wife Jenifer Layo of Syracuse and son in-law Bryan C. McDonald of Norfolk. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Madeleine Elizabeth and Mason Dean McDonald and two step-grandchildren, Jenna Lynn and Caleb Jay Lapage, along with her parents Richard and Mary Arnold of Williamsburg, VA and in-laws Frederick and Gretchen Bennett of Massena. She is also survived by her brother Jim and wife Vicki of Huntsville, AL along with nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter Ashley Beth McDonald in 2015.

Karin will be remembered for her love of life and for being an incredibly selfless person, always putting others before herself. She enjoyed spending every chance she could with her grandchildren. Always cooking with them, enjoying their sporting events and volunteering at their school. Her love of nature was apparent as she enjoyed hiking, swimming, kayaking and spending time with her horses. She was known for her many skills making crafts and sharing those with the people she cared for. Karin always had a creative flare she shared with those around her. Her utmost attention to detail in planning activities that were catered around her family, whether it was birthday parties, graduations or family events, Karin made everyone feel special in her own way.
