Julia Kiene (1890-1980)

Services were held Wednesday in Cyprus, Calif., for Julia Wolcott Kiene, director of the Westinghouse Home Economics Institute in Mansfield from 1938 to 1955.

Mrs. Kiene died March 29 at her home in Seal Beach, Calif., at the age of 89.

A nationally acclaimed nutritionist, Mrs. Kiene received several awards, including the Westinghouse Order of Merit, For her organization of "Health For Victory" clubs during World War II. She was a past national president of the Electrical Women's Round Table, which established a scholarship for outstanding home economics students in her name.

After retiring from Westinghouse in 1955, Mrs. Kiene became consulting home economist to U.S. Borax in Los Angeles for the development of laundry products and moved to Seal Beach to be near the company's Anaheim laboratory.

Surviving are one daughter, Betty Kiene Casey of West Palm Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
