Clayton Smith, who for many years had been a stalwart civic leader in Friends Cove, died at noon Monday, Nov. 3, 1952, after a lengthy illness. He was 85. An able and active leader in his community, Mr. Smith had wide interests in fields ranging from telephone service and insurance to the schools, township government and the Grange. Clayton Smith was born in Friends Cove, at the former Robert James farm on May 24, 1867, the son of Reuben and Rachel (Cessna) Smith. He was educated in the public schools, and later attended Allegheny Seminary at Rainsburg, as well as the Summer Normal School at Schellsburg and Woodbury. He taught for ten years in the Bedford county schools, after which he was employed by John Keller, a contractor for the Pennsylvania Railroad at Lancaster, as a timekeeper and paymaster. He was united in marriage with Mary E. Hastings of Willowstreet, Pa., on February 14, 1889. She preceded him in death December 4, 1946. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Ralph A. Diehl, Bedford Rt 3.; Dr. Thomas B. Smith of Evanston, Ill; John C. Smith of Bedford Rt 4, and Mrs. Kenneth Souser of Berwyn, Pa. A son, Ben, preceded him in death. Eight grandchildren also survive. He was a member of the Cove Evangelical and Reformed Church and a trustee of the Friends Cove Evangelical and Reformed Cemetery Association. He was associated with the Friends Cove Telephone Co., the Friends Cove Fire insurance Co., served two terms as a school director; an active member and leader of the Charlesville Grange, serving as secretary for 28 years, also a director of the Keystone Grange Exchange acting as purchasing agent for 30 years, a Township Road Supervisor for 23 years and secretary of the Bedford County Assoc. of Township Road Supervisors, Auditors and Assessors. Services at the late home, Rev. Bert Wynn officiating with interment in the Bedford cemetery.
