June D. Plath, 95, of Owatonna died peacefully on Sunday, August 13, 2017 at the Birchwood Cottages in Owatonna, Minnesota.
She was born August 9, 1922 in Brookings, South Dakota, the daughter of Fred and Mae (Cunningham) Sorg. Over the years, June shared many memories of growing up on the family farms with her two brothers and three sisters. Her favorite stories, told with a twinkle in her green eyes, involved her pet lamb, “Willie,” green apples, playing baseball, and sneaking off to fish for bullheads.
June married Lloyd Plath in 1938. They raised their four children on farms in southern Minnesota as well as Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin until they moved to Owatonna in 1951.
June was a homemaker first and foremost. She also worked alongside her husband on the farm. June always had large gardens and shelves of her canned goods. She loved baking and was famous for her pies—especially rhubarb. While she didn’t care for cooking, her husband always said it was “pretty damn good.” She was an avid quilter, seamstress, and enjoyed needlework. Fabric sales with her family were favorite shopping expeditions.
In addition to homemaking, she operated the Thrift Shop, a family owned consignment store in Owatonna. The Thrift Shop began as an extension of one of June’s hobbies—going to garage sales. She loved finding bargains for everyone on her shopping list.
She enjoyed travelling and bravely drove the large motor home during her adventures with her husband. June never lost her love of fishing and always said people needed to clean their own! When not traveling or fishing, she enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and word find books.
June delighted in spending time with family and friends: visiting, board games, and playing cards.
June is survived by her daughter Bev Fuller; sons Dennis (Kay) Plath and Roger (Ruth) Plath; nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and nine great-great grandchildren; sisters, Jean Alne and Retha Farrell, and brother, Lowell Sorg; along with many nieces and nephews.
June was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Marion, sister Margaret, and daughter LaVonne and sons-in-law, Albert and Chuck.
Family and friends will forever remember June’s kindness, generosity, caring, and humility.
Funeral services held at Michaelson Funeral Home.
Interment will be in the Owatonna Memorial Gardens in Owatonna.
