A longtime volunteer at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, Vernon Chapman, 94, died Sunday, July 27, 1997, at Cascade Park Care Center.

Mr. Chapman was an interpreter and carpenter at the Fort from 1973 until late 1996. After partially funding the construction, he was able to visit the Fort shortly before he died and see the carpenter shop nearly completed.

Mr. Chapman was born Nov. 6, 1902, near Lewiston, Idaho, and graduated from Washington State College. He was an agricultural extension agent for 16 years in Wyoming and Washington before retiring in 1968 and moving to Vancouver.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alberta, in 1986, his wife, Doris, in 1994, and a daughter, Verna Swaim.

Survivors include two sons, Dwight of Vancouver and Ray of Phil Campbell, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4., at First Congregational Church. There will be a family burial service at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
