J. L. Chapman, Early Day Teacher, Dead

J. L. Chapman, 92, who began teaching school in Asotin County in 1892, died yesterday at 12:45 a.m. at the Clarkston Rest Haven of illness related to age. His wife, another Asotin County Pioneer died June 24.

Chapman was born on Aug. 14, 1870, at Cedar Falls, Iowa. He came west at the age of 22 to begin teaching school at Theon, then a thriving community between Asotin and Anatone at a site now called Rocky Hollow.

On Oct. 13, 1895, at Theon, he married Grace Toops, who had come west from Ohio in 1878 as a girl of 2. They had moved to Iowa, where he taught school for two years, and then returned to Theon, where he taught.

They began farming in Anatone about 1900, and they moved to Idaho just across the Snake River from Asotin in 1902. Their children traveled by boat to school at Asotin rather than go considerably farther by land to their district school in Idaho.

Mr. and Mrs. Chapman moved to Asotin and into their final home on 2nd St. in 1949. Despite their advancing years, both were active in community affairs and took pride in gardening. They had hobbies of collecting bottles and Indian artifacts.

He was a member of the Asotin Lyons Club and the Asotin Chamber of Commerce and he was active for many years in Boy Scout work and in preparing for annual Asotin County Fairs. His health failed last year and he entered the Rest Haven on May 22.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Naomi Woodruff, Pomona, Ga., Mrs. Doris Babcock, Grangeville, and Miss Hester Chapman, Fort Huachuca, Ariz.; two sons, Vernon Chapman, Vancouver, Wash., and Ivan Chapman, Spokane. 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
