DeSAUSSURE Major General Edward Harleston deSaussure, Jr., died on Thursday, July 11, 2002 at home in Ponte Vedra, FL. He was born in 1918 in El Paso, Texas, where his father, a cavalry officer, was stationed. Following his retirement from the Army, General and Mrs. deSaussure lived for 25 years in Flat Rock, NC, before moving to Ponte Vedra five years ago. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1941. He received a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 1949. Among other assignments, he served in the South Pacific during WWII, Korea 1960-61, and Vietnam in 1966-67. He received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Joint Services Commendation Medal, Distinguished Service Medal and other service medals. General deSaussure was an avid golfer and woodworker, former polo player and poker enthusiast. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Survivors include his wife the former Frances Huger of Charleston, SC, son, Edward H. deSaussure, III of Mooresville, NC, daughters, Frances deSaussure Meade of Burke, VA, Eleanor deSaussure Bryan of Jacksonville, Anita deSaussure Tomm of Atlantic Beach, Margaret Laurens deSaussure of Ponte Vedra, 12 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and his brother, Dr. Charlton deSaussure of Charleston, SC. Graveside services will be held at a later date at St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church in Flat Rock, NC. Arrangements by Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach.
