The Rev. Dr. Luther Kuhlman, for 32 years a member of the board of foreign missions of the Lutheran church19 of which he served as president died Sunday morning at his home, 166 Carlisle street, from infirmities. He would have been 85 years old on November 8.
He had been in failing health, but only during the last 10 days had he been confined indoors.
Born at New Centerville, Somerset county, in 1851, a son of J. Frederick and Louisa (Smith) Kuhlman, Doctor Kuhlman received his early education in the common schools and the normal schools and began teaching in his native county at the age of 17 years
Leaving Pennsylvania, Doctor Kuhlman went with, his father to Nebraska, where the latter was a missionary for the Allegheny synod. While in Nebraska he taught school and also attended the University of Nebraska for two years. Doctor Kuhlman often recalled his pioneer clays in Nebraska. He was a member of the surveying corps that laid the state out in sections.
Graduate of Gettysburg
Returning to his native state in 1876. Doctor Kuhlman enrolled at Gettysburg college and was graduated in 1879 as valedictorian of his class. He pursued his course in theology at the local seminary and was licensed by the Alleghany synod of the Lutheran church to preach in 1882.
He served the following pastorates: Jennerstown, 1882-1884; Second Lutheran church, Baltimore, 1884-1888; Frederick, Maryland, 1888-1903, and Boiling Springs, 1920- 1922.
Following his pastorate at Frederick, Doctor Kuhlman became a member of the Gettysburg Theological seminary faculty, serving as professor of Biblical Theology from 1903 to 1916. He resigned this position to become the field secretary of the board of foreign missions of the Lutheran church and resided in York from 1916 to 1920. He was a member of the board over 30 years. He retired from active work in 1922.
Attended Scotland Conference
In 1910 Doctor Kuhlman represented the mission board at the world missionary conference at Edinburgh, Scotland. During this trip abroad, he also visited the Luther places in Germany, as well as the mission stations of the church in Egypt, Palestine and Syria. For the last ten years. Doctor Kuhlman had been a member of the commission of adjudication of the United Lutheran church, and at the time of his death its president. He received the degree of doctor of divinity from Gettysburg college and was a member of the local chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, national scholastic fraternity.
In 1882, Doctor Kuhlman married Miss Louisa Warner, of Gettysburg, Mrs. Kuhlman died January 9, 1928.
Services on Thursday
Surviving are several step-brothers and step-sisters residing in the western part of the United States and a number of nephews and nieces.
Funeral services Thursday after noon at 2 o'clock from the Christ (College) Lutheran church, with the pastor, the Rev. Dwight P. Putrnan, and Rev. H. L. Hench, president of the West Pennsylvania synod, in charge.
Interment in Evergreen cemetery.
The body will be in the church from 12:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon until the time of the funeral services. Friends may call at the late home, 166 Carlisle street, on Wednesday evening.
