Son of David Granowsky and Lillian Cohen. His father was a Russian immigrant and his mother was born in Illinois.

Known professionally as Hal Grant, was a jazz drummer and producer. He performed with a number of musicians, including Buddy and Wes Montgomery, Herbie Mann, Red Mitchell, Bill Evans and Lennie Tristano. He also toured with the Charlie Barnet and Claude Thornhill big bands.

in 1963, he and composer John Murtaugh formed the music production company Grant and Murtaugh, which generated hundreds of television jingles.

He later formed a production company with composer Dick Behrke.
