Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born Martin Schwenk in Baden, Germany, he served as a Sergeant in Troop B, 6th Cavalry, Union Army. In early July 1863, in an attempt to carry a communication through the enemy's lines in actions at Millerstown, Pennslyvainia, Sergeant Martin also rescued an officer from the hands of the Confederates. For most conspicuous gallantry, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on April 23, 1889.
