Emerson R. Kaspar, the son of Frank F. and Hanna H. (Knopf) Kaspar was born on November 15, 1923 on a farm northwest of Richland, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Schuyler, NE, attended grade school at District 12 in Richland and graduated from Schuyler High School in 1940. After graduation, he worked on various farms and clerked at Becker Grocery in Schuyler.
In February of 1943 Emerson joined the United States Navy. He trained at Farragut Idaho Naval Training Station. He also attended service schools at Iowa State University and San Diego, CA. On November 11, 1943 he was sent to Hawaii for more instruction on operating and repair of Higgins Landingcraft boats. He spent two years on Majuro and Eniwetok Atolls in the Marshall Islands as his stint during WWII. Emerson returned to the states in 1945 and was honorably discharged on January 26, 1946 after attaining the rating of Motor Machinist Mate 1C.
Following his time in the service, Emerson worked at Dowd Oil Co. in Schuyler and helped his parents who owned Anna Café. In June 1946 he earned a private pilot's license and flew Piper Cub planes for recreation.
On April 6, 1948 he was united in marriage to Gloria Mares at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Schuyler. He did earth moving in Colfax County until moving to a farm in the Salem Community northeast of St. Edward in 1955. He farmed and worked for Loup Valley Construction Company of Monroe, NE until 1971 when he started E.R. Kaspar Construction Company, a soil conservation and earth moving business. He retired in 1999.
Emerson was a member of the St. Edward Catholic Church in St. Edward, NE and a trustee there. He also served on the District 17 School Board in St. Edward, and the Archdiocese Pastoral Council for four years. Emerson was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Crosier American Legion Post #226, and the VFW. He loved sports, particularly baseball, and also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Emerson is survived by four children: Daniel (Dorian) Kaspar of St. Edward, NE; Kathy (Ron) Spiegel of Loup City, NE; Alan (Renee) Kaspar and Kevin (Bridget) Kaspar of Omaha, NE; 19 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law Delores Mares of Schuyler, NE, along with other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Gloria, son Terrence, daughter Carol Shepherd, grandchildren: Michele Werts and Clayton Kaspar, four brothers and two sisters.
