Norbert Louis Halter, age 94, a resident of Charleston, died Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at the Charleston Manor.
He was born on February 18, 1923, at Wyatt, Mississippi Co., MO, the thirteenth child born to Michael Henry and Mary Ethel (Carlisle) Halter. His family moved to Charleston approximately 1925. He was a lifelong member of St. Henry’s Catholic Church and a graduate of St. Henry’s High School.
On June 20, 1943, he married Margaret Elizabeth Boyd who died April 27, 1982. On December 22, 1983, he married Juanita Tanner Boeker, who died October 27, 2005.
As a young man, Norbert helped his father Michael Halter and brother Linus Halter in the brick laying and remodeling businesses. After his father retired, Norbert and his brother Martin formed a partnership and continued the remodeling business. Later, Norbert worked on his own as a remodeler. Many of the downtown Charleston businesses and churches were customers of the Halters, including the building of St. Henry’s Catholic Grade School and remodeling of St. Henry’s Catholic Church in the 1940s.
Norbert was a member of the Missouri National Guard during WW II. He was a former member of the Charleston Knights of Columbus. For many years Norbert was involved in Boy Scouts and served as scout troop leader.
In 1980, Norbert joined the Charleston Lions Club and quickly became very active: 1983 Club 1st Vice President; 1984 President; 1984 Zone Chairperson; 1984 Lion of the Year; 1986 Deputy District Governor; 1988 Vice District Governor; 1989 District Governor; 1997 Board of Directors.
Norbert was privileged to receive numerous Lions Club awards: Outstanding Achievement Award 3 times; Outstanding Membership Award; International Leadership Award; Extension Award 4 times; Melvin Jones Award 2 times; Club President’s Award 2 times; Outstanding Service Award; Fund Raising Award; Outstanding Director (Missouri) 3 times.
In 1980, Norbert’s first wife Margaret was honored as Charleston’s Woman of the Year. In 1991, Norbert was awarded Charleston’s Man of the Year.
Preceding him in death are his parents, eleven siblings, two beloved wives, and a baby son Leslie Allan Halter.
Surviving is one sister Mary Ellen Stricker of Charleston, and two children: Philip Michael (Francine) Halter of Charleston and Linda Louise (Jim) Enderle of Jefferson City, MO; and step-son Warren (Colette) Boeker of Bainbridge Island, WA.
Grandchildren include Francesca (Chad) Hahn of Lawrence, KS; Kimberly (Jason) Riseling of Tulsa, OK; and Amy (Dwayne) Vidi of High Springs, FL. Step grandchildren include Tess, Ava, and Chloe Boeker of Seattle, WA. Great grandchildren include Nathan and Reed Hahn of Lawrence, KS; Aidan and Dylan Vidi of High Springs, FL; and step-grandchild Carrie Riseling of Tulsa, OK.
Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until time for the funeral mass 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 4, 2017, at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Charleston. Father David Dohogne, will serve as celebrant.
Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery near Charleston under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be members of the Charleston Lions Club.
