He was a cantor, organist and choir leader.

He started his musical career as child as a member of the Thomanerchor (boy choir of St Thomas church) in Leipzig.

After studying music he came back to St Thomas as organist.

After a professorship at university of music in Berlin he toured through Europe and America as a famous virtuoso at the organ.

From 1939 until his dead he was the choir leader of Thomanerchor at St Thomas in Leipzig.
