Lester Lennon, son of the late W. Mack and Della A. Lennon, died 2:50 a.m. Tuesday in Columbus County Hospital, Whiteville, North Carolina.

He was joined in Holy Matrimony to the former Miss Frances Baldwin. This union was blessed with one son. Mr. Frances B. Lennon preceded him in death.

Lester completed grammar school in Columbus County and finished Thompson Institute, Lumberton, N.C. He earned a B.S. Degree with honors at Shaw University, Raleigh, N.C. While at Shaw, he was a star player in football and participated in track. From Columbia University in New York City, he received a Master of Science degree. He also did further study at New York University.

After college Lester returned to Thompson Institute where he taught for many years. He also taught in the public schools of Spring Hope and Mt. Olive. N.C. At college level he taught at Mississippi State Teachers College, Holly Springs, Mississippi, and later became dean of the college at Tennessee State, Nashville, Tennessee.

Being interested in young people, Lester accepted a position working with the youth of Abyssinia Baptist Church under Congressman Adam Clayton Powell.

His early years were spent in Columbus County in the Piney Grove Community. Here he accepted Christ and joined the Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He was a loyal member until he moved away. After moving to New Rochelle N.Y. he affiliated himself with the Baptist of New Rochelle, serving as Sunday School teacher for many years though he was totally blind.

Survivors include a son, Lester Graves Lennon of California; four brothers, Acy Lennon, Corona, N.Y. , Rosoce and Benjamin Lennon, Evergreen and Macom Lennon, Bladenboro; five sisters, Lillian L. Stewart, Bessie L. Summersett and Minnie L Royals, Whiteville, Naomi D. Lennon, Corona Long Island, N.Y. and Eva L. Corbett, New York City; two brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law, neices, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
