Herman Henry Aufforth, 67, Bowbells, died Monday, December 18, 2017, in the Kenmare hospital.

Herman was born on March 8, 1950, in Kenmare, the son of Roelf and Leone (Carlson) Aufforth. He was raised and educated in Bowbells, graduating with the class of 1968. After graduation, Herman enlisted with the Coast Guard, where he proudly served his country from February 1969 until October 1971.

After serving his country, Herman briefly helped his family farm before starting a career at the Burke County Courthouse as an Auditor in 1974. He would continue on this career path until 1986. Starting in 1985, Herman began his next and most favorite career as member of the United States Postal Service. He started in Kenmare, moved on to Flaxton and then finished most of his years in Bowbells. This would be a job he would cherish until his retirement in 2008.

On August 30, 1975, Herman married the love of his life, Beth Bohnsack, in Hillsboro, North Dakota. This union was blessed with three wonderful children: Brian, Joy, and Molly. Family was very important to Herman, and he was blessed to have one that cared so deeply for him that, on January 8, 2002, he received a kidney transplant from his sister Tammy.

Herman lived a full and active life while managing Type I diabetes always with a smile. His priorities were his faith, his family, his friends, and his country. In his younger years he was surrounded by avid hunters, and that passion carried throughout his whole life. He shared that love for the outdoors and hunting with his children and grandchildren. He honored his country, and for many years he with help from his family set up the Legion American flags all along Main Street for patriotic holidays. After his retirement his daily routine was a trip up town to get the mail and make various stops to visit with everyone. He loved to tell and hear good stories and jokes. He was filled with laughter, and that laughter was infectious.

Herman was a member of the United Methodist Church and of the Carl Oftedahl American Legion Post #127, both of Bowbells. In addition, he was honored to be inducted into the North Dakota Goose Hunters Hall of Fame in 2004.

Herman is survived by Beth, his wife of 42 years; son Brian (Teri) Aufforth, Minot; daughters: Joy (John) Beard, Bowbells, and Molly Aufforth (Kellen Peters), Madison, WI; brothers: Doug (Glenys) Holter, Pierre, SD, and Rolf (Vickie) Aufforth, Bowbells; sisters: Susan Watson, Sandy UT, and Tammy Ryberg, Bowbells; three grandchildren: Zackery Beard, Haley Seykora, and Camden Aufforth; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Donovan “Sam” Holter; sister-in-law Joann Luke Holter; and nieces Kristi Jo Aufforth and Lori Borth.
