It is thought, that Anna was engaged to a young man who went to the war, and she was pregnant. (She lists herself as "widow" on the census.) He was killed or did not come back and Anna's daughter Marie (pron. Mary) was born in 1891 in Austria. When Marie was a small child (in Vienna,) her mother sent her to live on a farm in Europe and that family raised her. When Marie was 13 or 14, her mother sent for her to come to New York to live with her. Marie was a "country bumpkin" and Anna had been cultivating herself through the fine arts in New York City. Marie later married Theodore Macheras a Greek immigrant and they had 4 children. When the children were small, Theodore deserted the family, possibly to be with another woman; and the fact that his mother-in-law Anna was domineering disagreed with him. During the depression she purchased a farm and ran it as a bed and breakfast. The guests that would come to the farm were from New York City and would rent a bedroom. She was a motivated and innovative businesswoman. According to some of her relatives she made wine in her bathtub. Her three granddaughters from her daughter Mary would work during the summer time at the bed-and-breakfast aka it was a small independent working farm.
The 1925 New York City census lists Karl Opava age 27 and Mary Opava age 18(Anna's nephew & neice born in Austria) living with the family at 349 E. 72nd Street, New York, NY. Anna's parents are Frank Matejcek & Frana. Possibly had sister Mary Lencz and Nellie Opava. Nellie may have had children Karl (Ludwig?), Mitzi & Poldi. Any information is appreciated.
