155 years ago today—July 21, 1866—Magdalena Bury recorded a plat of 40 acres at the Leavenworth County Courthouse. The name given to this plat was Tonge Noxie honoring the Delaware Indian who ran the lodge north of town. Magdalena and her husband Christian would record a second plat of 80 acres in 1869. It is commonly thought she signed these documents because her husband could not write. The Burys were both born in Germany and had resided in Atchison before their move to Tonganoxie. Magdalena died in 1870 and was buried at Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie. ( Tonganoxie Historical Society )
