Thomas Humphrey, 90, of Calistoga, Calif., passed from this life Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017. He was born Jan. 11, 1927, in Pontiac, Mich., to the late Thomas and Helen (McLarty) Humphrey.

Thomas grew up on a farm near Caro, Mich. He served as a Drill Instructor in the United States Army during WWII. While on a USO trip to Hot Springs, Ark., he met the love of his life and partner for 65 years, Ada (Gowan) Humphrey.

After the war, Thomas and Ada moved to Michigan where Tom worked for General Motors for over 35 years. Thomas and Ada were very active in the community life of Pontiac and Clarkston where they raised their daughters.

After retiring, they moved to Searcy, Ark. They spent 30 years traveling all over the United States and Canada visiting family and friends. Tom always brought his tools along on trips to help with repairs and projects. Tom loved nature and always stopped at any national or state parks, monuments or historic sites he drove by or chose as a destination. In between trips, Tom earned an Associate of Science degree, a realtor's license and became a lay speaker for small churches in rural Arkansas. Thomas and Ada were very active in the First United Methodist Church of Searcy.

Thomas spent the last seven years living with his daughters and their families, half the year in Michigan and half in California.

People were drawn to Tom. He was a master storyteller and patient, attentive listener. He had an open mind and heart. He loved to be useful and help anyone, but especially those he loved. He cherished his family. He and Ada delighted in the joy of others and loved entertaining in their home. Everyone felt happy to be near Thomas because he saw the very best in each person.

His wife, Ada; parents; sister, Allie Groth; and brothers, John, Bill and Robert Humphrey precede him in death. Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Casey(Gary) of Clarkston, Mich; Michelle Thall(Robert) of St. Helena, Calif.; three grandsons, Jacob Thall, Samuel Thall and Keenan Casey; three brothers, Edward Humphrey, Addison Humphrey and Kenneth Humphrey; sister-in-law, Kay Jones; brothers-in-law, Beverly Gowan (Donna) and Larry Gowan(Brenda); numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, at the First United Methodist Church in Searcy with Rev. David Orr officiating. Interment will follow at White County Memorial Gardens in Searcy, where Thomas will be laid to rest next to Ada on their 72nd wedding anniversary.
