Statesman. He served as the 35th President of Ecuador from 1984 to 1988. He received most of his education in the United States before returning to Ecuador and entering national politics in 1966 as a congressional deputy. As a member of the Social Christian Party, he was elected president and soon gained fame throughout Latin America for his tough-guy image. He is best remembered for his free-market approach to economic policy that won him the admiration of U.S. President Ronald Reagan. After leaving the presidency he served as the mayor of his hometown, Guayaquil from 1992 to 2000.
