Bersch, Dennis W., age 85, passed away Monday, June 4, 2018, in Mequon, WI. He was born October 5, 1932, and grew up in Sheboygan, WI. Survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary K. (nee Glaeser). Father of Dennis, Jr. (Clare), Frederick (Karen), Joe (Carolyn), Michael (Beverly). Grandfather of: Madeline, Elizabeth and Margaret (d.2004); Paul, Katherine, Patrick and Peter. Great grandfather of: Kenzie, Lucas and Emily.

Further survived by loving sisters Joan (d. Jerome) Schnettler, Esther (Robert (Wood)) Vadnais, Frances Bigari and brother John. Preceded in death by brothers Charles (Rosemary), Frederick and sister Mary Belle (d. Pat) Werner.

He enlisted in the US Navy (Nov. 1, 1951) during the Korean conflict and would return to Wisconsin on the GI bill to attend St. Norbert College and Marquette University from where he graduated and became a CPA. He began his career at Arthur Anderson, started his own firm, Bersch & Company, S.C., ran the national construction industry practice for Deloitte, and returned to his own firm where he retired. He specialized in percentage of completion accounting for long term contracts, specifically the construction industry which became the driving force of his career. He introduced and defended these methods with his associates, peers and the SEC audit guide committee. He wrote for trade journals and publications, spoke at forums and, seminars, and appeared before the SEC, Congress, the IRS, Treasury department and industry associations. He was the first national associate member of the Associated General Contractors’ of America, and later served as National Director of associate members.

He loved a good story and a good party, the most famous of which was the annual Wreath Raising Party that started in the 1960s and ran for over 25 years raising over $125,000 for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. He was passionate about many things, especially those related to boats and salmon fishing which he, his family and business associates enjoyed on a series of boats; all named Queen Mary after his wife. He served on the President’s Advisory Council at St. Norbert College, the board of Cardinal Stritch University, and Skylight Opera Theater. He was a member of MENSA, the VFW, DAV and American Legion Post 457, and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was an avid golfer in several leagues since his retirement.

Visitation will be 5–7pm Friday, June 8th at Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Service, 10280 N. Port Washington Rd., Mequon, WI. Additional visitation Saturday, June 9th at 10am immediately followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30am at Lumen Christi Catholic Church, 2750 W Mequon Road, Mequon, WI.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Maggie Bersch Memorial Fund at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Lumen Christi Catholic Church Helping Hands Fund, Mequon.
