During the summer of 1887, Paul Goepel journeyed with many members of the New York Liederkranz to the Catskill Mountains. They noted the colonies at Onteora Park and similar resorts, and Mr. Goepel was imbued with the ambition to found such a colony. He at once broached the subject to many in those about him, and as usual his enthusiasm was contagious. His group of friends and acquaintances joined him, and at once the party made a search for a suitable location.

As a result of their efforts, the beautiful Elka Park*, an attractive cottage colony located on the slope of Spruce Top Mountain in the northern Catskill Mountains, was founded in 1889.

* = El Ka is the German sounding of L K, the initials of the Liederkrantz Club centered in NY. Liederkrantz = 'songs-coronet', singing (and drinking) being original central activities of the social organization.

Goepel left the Association after seven years to develop another summer resort, Schoharie Mansion, which stood just outside Association grounds until the 1920s.
