Drowned In Kaw. George Schell Overcame While Swimming. Body Recovered.

George Schell, 22, of 518 East Fairchild St., was drowned in the Kaw river when he stepped from a sand bar into a deep hole Monday afternoon about 4 o'clock.

Shell had gone swimming with several small boys. He was not regarded as good swimmer. When he stepped from the sand bar into about nine feet of water at a spot where he thought the water was shallow, he went to the bottom.

The boys, the oldest of whom was 15, were unable to help him. The body was found about two hours afterward by Frank Fisher, 211 East Fairchild street, and Floyd Carter, 515 East Gordon street. It was the ninth body Carter has assisted in taking from the water.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Schell; two brothers, John, 19, and Paul, 14; four sisters, Mrs. Catherine Witcher; Irene, 16; Marcella, 12, and Helen Marie, 6; and his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Ingenthron, all of Topeka.

The body was taken to Taty's undertaking establishment. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
