Glen Richter, age 95, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois passed away Saturday, September 1, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 6, 2018 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery with Military Rites by the Mt. Carroll American Legion. Friends may call during visitation 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Thursday, prior to the service at the Funeral Home. Glen was the third son born to John and Anna (Wacker) Richter born February 5, 1923 in rural Mt. Carroll, Salem Township, on the dining room table of the family farm. They later moved to the old brick house near town. When Glen was young, he survived an appendix attack, and also being shot by accident. Glen graduated from Mt. Carroll High School with the Class of 1940. He did painting for Harr and Weidman until 1942. It was then that Glen decided to join the Navy Air Force in July, 1942. He was sent to Milton, Iowa for Primary Flight and Ground School, then in January of 1943 to Iowa City for Pre-Flight Training, to Ottumwa, Iowa for Basic Flight Training, and Corpus Christi, Texas for advanced training where he graduated and received his wings as an Ensign. Glen went on to Instrument Flight Training in Atlanta, Georgia, then back to Texas for Instrument Instructor Flight School at Beeville, Texas. He was an Instrument Flight Instructor for nine months and promoted to Lt. J. G.. In January of 1944, Glen went on to instruct Fighter Tactics, and later to Florida for Corsair training. WWII was ending when Glen served as Transportation Officer at Green Cove Springs, Florida. Glen was an accomplished pilot and kept his passion for flying for many years. He was known around Carroll County for his acrobatics while flying, even completing a Immelmann turn maneuver under the old Savanna-Sabula Bridge.
On June 26, 1949, Glen married Gladys Platt in Savanna. They moved to Mt. Carroll and bought their first home. Glen owned and operated Richters Service Station until 1952, then Glen and Gladys bought the Coast-To-Coast Store, Mt. Carroll in 1953, and operated the store until 1968. He worked at the Mt. Carroll Insurance Agency for three years, then owned and operated a TV Sales and Service store in Mt. Carroll from 1973 until 1989. Glen serviced all the merchandise that he sold in his business. He was quite a handyman around the house and could fix anything that was repairable. Glen retired in 1989 and he and Gladys began spending the winter months in Alamo, Texas each year. They enjoyed their family Christmases in Texas. He also went golfing for the first time with Doctor Piper, he was hooked and spent many days of retirement on the golf course with Gladys. He and Gladys were avid card players, especially Bridge. Glen always looked forward to family gatherings.
Glen will be dearly missed by his wife, Gladys of Mt. Carroll; his son, Jay (Shirley) Richter of Riverdale, Iowa; his daughter, Jana (Pat) Deleersnyder of Birmingham, Alabama; three grandchildren, Jaylee, Gabriel and Jenny; two step-grandchildren, Michael and Jeremy; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Glen is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Edward and Donald, and his sister, Mary Jean.
