Mr. Jakob Goettel, 90, of Mount Airy, passed away early Wednesday morning, September 5, 2018, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Goettel was born June 28, 1928, in Feketitsch, Yugoslavia, one of three children born to the late Jakob and Elisabeth Schmidt Goettel. Jakob served our country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict (1952-1954). He worked several years at Pine State Knitwear in Mount Airy and later retired as the plant manager from Tarheel Knitting Mills in Wilmington. Jakob was a dedicated Christian and a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margarete “Peggy” Haack Goettel of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Trina Goettel of Mount Airy; two grandchildren, Dusty Goettel and his fiancée, Kristina Bourassa, of Wilmington and Petra Goettel of Atlanta, GA; a sister-in-law, Anny Haack Fritz of Germany; a niece, Karin Fritz Faust of Germany; a nephew, Werner Wagner of Germany; and many great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Goettel was preceded in death by a son, William T. “Bill” Goettel; a sister, Eva Goettel Wagner; and an infant brother, John Goettel. A service of worship and celebration of Jakob’s life will be held Saturday, September 8, 2018, at 11:00 AM at Piney Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mark A. Reece, Jr. officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, with military honors by the North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at Piney Grove Baptist Church, 278 Piney Grove Road, Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Piney Grove Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1022, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
