Joyce O. Smith passed away Friday, September 14, 2018, at age 88. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was a member of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church and the “Angels” Sunday School Class. Her strong spirit helped her battle many illnesses in the last decade of her life. She will be missed and very fondly remembered and deeply loved by all her family and friends.

She was born on April 23, 1930 in Upper Tygart, Kentucky. She graduated from Olive Hill, Kentucky, High School in 1947 and she attended college at Morehead State in Kentucky and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She worked at State Tech as the business office secretary for five years. For several decades, she was the co-owner and office manager of Knox Vinyl.

She is preceded in death by her parents Homer and Grace Owens; by her husband of 64 years, James (J.T.); by her son, Jeff; and by her brother Fred Owens. She is survived by her sons: Michael and his wife Katie; James and his wife Michele; Gary and Barry; by her grandsons Walker, Wyatt, Jamie and his wife Johnna, Jeremy and his fiancée Lindsay, Colby, and Patrick and his fiancée Savannah; and by great-grandchildren Blake, Laila, and Emery. She is survived by her sisters Lois Phillips, Gypsy Kinder, Janet Maddix, and Reta DeVore, and her brother Donny Owens. She is survived by her very special nephew Phillip Smith and his wife Patty and their daughters Rachel and Robyn. She is survived by her late son Jeff’s wife, Tami Johnson, and her husband Bob and daughters Gabrielle, Hannah, and Alyssa.

She will be missed by her good friend and caregiver Fran Owen and by her close friends Edna Mellon, Karen and Gary Miller, Martha Roberts and Percy Shultz. The family would like to offer special thanks to the doctors who took such great care of her for many years: Dr. Saji Eapen and his NP Tiffany Sipe, Dr. Jeffrey McMichael, Dr. Marcia Williams-Lyons and all other providers involved in her care.

Flowers will be appreciated or in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Wallace Memorial Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends at Wallace Memorial Baptist Church on Friday, September 21, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life service with the Reverend Kent Williams officiating. Family and friends will gather Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. at Wallace Memorial Baptist Church to proceed to Berry Highland Memorial for a 1:00 p.m. graveside service.
