Urban Vigors Munro was baptised on 11 April 1801 at St Mary’s Church, Fort St. George, Madras. He was the natural son of Capt. (later Major-General) John Munro of Teaninich, who in 1810 became the East India Company Resident in Travancore, and for a period Diwan of the princely state. His mother is not named but is presumed to be an Indian native. (Urban’s name was probably a compliment to Col. Urban Vigors, at the time commandant of the 3rd Regiment of the Madras Infantry.)

Urban is likely to have been educated in Britain but returned India and to Travancore to be appointed as the first dedicated Conservator of Forests . He married Mathilda Caroline Kohlhoff. Their son John Daniel Munro was responsible for opening up the Cardamom Hills for plantation, and was himself a tea planter at Ashley, Peermade. He is buried at CSI Peermade. Of four daughters, Amelia Maria and Catherine Anne both died in England in October 1846; Matilda Margaret died in Ootacamund in 1858; and Theodosia Alexandrina married surgeon Alexander Prince Petman (1835-1900) in Cottayam in 1862 and died in Marylebone in 1889. She is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery (billiongraves.com/grave/person/1277964).
