An Oberleutnant and Flugzeugführer, he served as Navigations Offizier for III Gruppe, Kampfgeschwader 4. He died during a mission against Liverpool when his aircraft (He111H-5; wn: 3839; 5J+CD) was attacked by a Beaufighter nightfighter of 25 Squadron RAF crewed by Pilot Officer David William Thompson and Pilot Officer L.D.Britain. Although he managed to bail out of the stricken aircraft, which eventually crashed near Lullington, he was too low for his parachute to fully deploy and he was killed.
