Joseph M. Kwiatkowski

BATH - Joseph M. Kwiatkowski, formerly of Olean and Allegany, was taken up in the glory of God peacefully, with his family at his bedside, Saturday (Dec. 8, 2018) at Bath VA, where he had been residing for the past three years.

Born Jan. 24, 1922, in Olean, he was the son of the late Martin and Anna Dutkiewicz Kwiatkowski.

Joe went to Transfiguration Grammar School and attended Olean High until 1940, when he left to serve his country in the United States Navy. At the age of 85, he received his high school diploma.

While serving with the United States Navy, from 1940-1946, he was aboard the USS Drayton 366 in the South Pacific, including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, New Guinea, Australia and other points in the Pacific. His rank was boiler technician 1st class petty officer and acting chief aboard USS Repose, where he recovered from his injuries sustained during the war.

Joe was a member of St John's Roman Catholic Church and volunteered his time during the Catholic Charities appeal. He worked for Clark Bros./Dresser Rand for 40 years and was a union steward for many of those years, retiring in 1984. After his retirement from Dresser, he worked at School 7 in North Olean as a cafeteria monitor.

In his younger years, Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling. He always had a passion for cooking and often prepared wild game dinners for his fellow members of the St Stephen's Club. Joe was well known for his delicious recipe for turtle soup. He was active with Little League baseball in a coaching capacity, as well as operating the food concession.

In his leisure time he demonstrated his artistic ability by drawing cartoons and caricatures and sharing these with family and friends. Always interested in learning and creating, he took wood shop, ceramic and pottery classes later in life. One of his all time favorite past times was attending any event where he could be on the dance floor dancing a polka.

Joe will be remembered for his infectious smile and his giving nature, the love of God, his country, family and friends.

Surviving, and always on his mind and in his heart, are four daughters, Elaine Kwiatkowski of Olean, Sharon (Bill) Aloi of Liverpool, Karen (Jack) Trietley of Red Rock, Ariz. and Audrey Sandore of Fayetteville Ark.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, David J. Kwiatkowski; his sister, Virginia Sturm; a brother, Walter Kwiatkowski; and infant brother, Francis.

Burial will be at St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
